Your Nav Bar Here

31 October 2010

people shouting across the avenues, "HEY, PEACOCK!"

Halloween was a low-key event this year

except for the fact that you made
the best costume you've ever had.

You've been imagining it for months.

And it feels pretty dang good that
it came together so nicely.

You enlisted the help of amazing friends.
Designers. Artists. Professionals.

You needed your peacock tail engineered
to be able to flip up or down.
Depending on your mood.
Or in case you saw something you liked.
Wherever the night may take you.

Many strangers pointed out to you that this bird-flashiness
was reserved for male peacocks.

Yes, you were aware of that.
But let's stay focused on what really matters here, people.

And New York is such a funny playground for big kids.
All the time. But especially today.

Whole families in costume.
Team costumes.
Babies in costume. (Goo.)
Small dogs in costume.

The perfect balance between
active participation and nonchalance

It's the perfect place to not know the difference
between who's dressed up
and who just ... isn't.

The day where your usual small interactions with strangers turn into whole conversations loaded with compliments and questions of interest.
And you realize that people value creativity.
They respect cleverness.
They dig wit.
They agree with you that these things are not just fun,
but truly important in our world.

And, it turns out, there's a day to celebrate them.

And it's important for everyone,
maybe especially New Yorkers, to remember
that we don't have to take ourselves so seriously all the time.

Happy Halloween
